Malia Kathryn  Manuel

Aloha! My name is Malia Manuel and I am a Senior Journalism Student at McKinley High School. I am apart of The Pinion's Editorial Board. I have been a member of The Pinion since my the 23-24 school year, which was my junior year. I was interested in journalism because of my history of writing and reading, specifically books on politics. These books have always inspired my purpose in writing, as I feel everything written is in efforts to sway someone to a certain side or agenda.

I am also the President of the Literary Magazine Club as well as the Editor-In-Chief at McKinley, Ka Hana Kaulana. My position as a student journalist informs my decisions as the leader of this club. They form sort of a symbiotic relationship in my mind. I can easily derive ideas and activities from my lit club as well as give my Journalism team something to write about. Because of these positions I hold, I feel I am deeply connected to my community and therefore have an obligation to the organizations I am apart of and to the connections I have built.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
